Things in LA - LA

Today, I am listing some photos I took in LA downtown and around my office.

I found these around wholesale store streets in the east side of downtown.

This looks really LA.

An elephant, a giraffe and a hand burger...
This is a sign store.

I found a huge ship on a street. It is kind of hard to see, but the bottle under the tree looks familiar.

This is a building of Coca Cola.

Palm trees...very Californian..

Street lights installation at LACMA's new addition designed by Renzo Piano, who also designed Kansai International Airport in Japan.

The billboard says,
"Call 811 before dig the ground! We know what is underneath!" a message from the city to avoid the people damaging city's water lines and such.
I guess people dig the ground without thinking around here...

ビル全体がPOP(ペプシの宣伝)
POP on facade.

Video finder on facade

This is one of my favorite items in the United States. It throws the garbage in a very American way! I give 4 thumbs up to the people who actually agreed to this method and build this truck!
When I saw this for the first time, I could not stop laughing saying "you taking the whole thing?!?!" .

There is a better version which an arm extends out from the side.

At night -

Cherishing memories, wondering about tomorrow, reconfirming today's ground,

I like my quiet office at night. When I turn off the lights, the ordinary things fade out, and I start noticing new features in the darkness.

Photos and pictures leaning against the window, and the extension of my room across the glass.

Dancing shadow

Blue leading lights - pilot lights of my computer

Ring Design -

A ring design I did a while ago. The material is white gold.

A combination of satin and polish finish is applied.

The actual ring.
I designed this before the one above. The material is platinum.

And the very first one I had a jeweler made from my CAD drawing. Platinum ring with 4 small and 1 large diamond insets.

All of them have scratches because they have been worn. I enjoy this sort of detailed tiny design, too.
There was a fixture company that wanted me to design a platinum faucet series, but the offer has gone somewhere.

Salon Design -

It's been a while since I wrote about our design last time.

This is a design we prepared for a certain salon project. We intended to create an unified atmosphere with decorations and lightings, without adding a lot of construction cost.

The this ropes on the wall run from right to left and lead customers into the main salon area.
The followings are concept images.

The ropes run on the ceiling, and

fall on the other side of the space.

Well, that was not enough to satisfy our creators spilits. We started pondering about the way to coorpoerate the decoration and lighting.

One morning, I came up with an idea that uses the electrical wire of a track light instead of thin ropes. Two wires start from a transfomer, and wherever they get close to each other, we can attach the light.

We tested on the wall of our office to see how it works. The wires are glued onto the wall with a very strong glue, and painted over with the white paint. It is interesting to see the wires come out of the wall in 3D, and also they could punch through the wall, too.

In this information-filled society, our clients sometimes have much information than we do. They bring some magazines and show us photos of spaces they like. It actually helps us understand what they are looking for, but it is too easy for us to create something simply cool or beautiful.

Regardless it is a store design, office desig or residential design, we believe that an introduction of a very unique idea or an invention help set up a BRAND of the space.

Dawn -

I am sitting in Starbucks with a cup of coffee next to me in a city one hour north of LA, and waiting for my project presentation time at 9:30A.M. The project location is Florida. I worked till 2:00A.M. and woke up at 4:00A.M., then left my house located one hour south of LA. If there is no traffic, the total driving time is about 2 hours, but if there is an accident or a jam, it easily takes the double.

I don't like to be late for any meetings, so I usually leave with plenty of time ahead. If I get to the destination early, I can work on my laptop in a cafe, and that is pretty enjoyable.

After stopped by my office in LA to pick up some documents, I started driving toward north. When I arrived at the destination, it was still before 7:00 A.M...I guess it was a little too early.

Since we are in Summer Time, it was still dim outside.

Leaves lit by the half moon and street lights.

When I was working for a company, I remember that I worked thought the night many times. Only few people did that with me. Around 8:00A.M., crowd started occupying the empty streets, and the scene pulled me back to the reality. It was always a strange moment to me.

Between the walls -

Little Tokyo in Los Angeles is typically known for its location next to a district filled with homeless people, and for no prominent attractions. Because of these impressions, Japanese local and tourists have not paid attentions.

I used to think the same way when I moved to LA 3 years ago. However, due to the new development of the surrounding areas, the number of condominiums has been tripled, and Art District next to Little Tokyo has been getting a lot of attentions from young people. The number of the visitors in Little Tokyo has increased dramatically.

I went out to drink with a Japanese American friend who is 20 years older than me last Friday. He took me to a narrow array between two old buildings where I heard someone singing with sound of the acoustic guitar.

It was a bar surrounded by building exterior walls. He told me that his father took him for the first time when he was only 5 years old, so that means that this place has been here more than 50 years.
There is a connected interior lounge/ Chinese restaurant facing the main street, too. It has been renovated, but most of the pieces in the space looked rustic and had an original taste. (I can not guarantee the food since i have not eaten here.)
It seemed that the time has stooped in this bar, and I long for its long lasting life here.

Fast food Restaurant -

One of my friends whom I have known for 20years visited me. He is interested in opening a fast food restaurant, so I took him to several places in LA.

There is one Mexican fast food restaurant that I go time to time close to my house.
It doesn't look like a typical Mexican place, but the design is clean and sotisphicated, and it seems go well with hot summer days.

Interior colors are coordinated in white, black and light green. Graphic design works well with the atmosphere.

But, there are some essential elements missing as a fast food restaurant. The wide path and large spaces between tables create tension instead of casual feeling, which is wanted in fast food restaurant.

This place probably was built to seek and test a concept between a fast food restaurant and typical restaurant with servers.

By the way, I have to come up with some ideas for a project in Florida for tomorrow's meeting...but I can not think of anything....so I am trying to escape from the reality by writing this...This is not the first time to feel this, but I feel like a writer who is facing a deadline tomorrow...
