My second home 2 -

Chicago architecture is distinguished from NY architecture by its height. It expands to the sky whereas NY architecture keeps it at mid height.

Great Chicago Fire in 1871 burned the whole city, and a new city was designed on an empty land. (Link)
The city's layout is based on grids, so one can see all the way to the horizon.

A high rise condominium. The sky was reflected on the facade and the collaboration of the nature and man-made object created a fantastic feel.

I visited my friend couple in the famous Mies van der Rohe building.

A view from inside of their place.
The black metal frame of the building emphasized modernism, and their interior was very urban and matching with Chicago's air. As an additional information, both of them are interior designers.

They always treat me with the best European taste.

Suddenly, a spider man came down to wash the window with one thin rope tied on his body....
It is the 20th floor above ground...

My second home 1 -

At 7:00 A.M. on Thursday, I arrived at LAX rubbing on my sleepy eyes.

After 4 hours of flight, this is the airport at my final destination.

That is...

The city I lived for the 2nd longest time;11 years, in my life, following my 18 years of time in Japan.

The city I spent my 20th, the time I faced a lot of trials and tribulations in my life.

And the city I still like the most in the United States.

Chicago!

June 9th - 6

Before going to the meeting at 2:00 P.M., I finished some of my errands and reviewed my assistants' works.

"You don't wait for works to come to you. You have to be able to create works by yourself."

Things I was told when I was 24 years old.
"You don't wait for works to come to you. You have to be able to create works by yourself."

It was hard for me to understand at that age.
Now I am telling exactly the same thing to my assistants, knowing they don't understand 100%. But I believe there will be a time when they realize the importance of these words, so I tell them now.

Sooner or later, everyone will have to be teaching his or her subordinates.
Unless one makes efforts to learn as much as possible before the times comes, he or she will be ashamed
of little knowledge to pass to the followers.
I never want my assistants to feel that in their future.

The other day, through a SNS I suddenly received an e-mail from my former boss who taught me everything at Gary Lee Partners more than 10 years ago. Now he is a director at a large company in Chicago.
I remember that I sometimes thought he was very annoying for picking up very tiny details of my works and complained.

Despite the fact I thought so, I wrote him an e-mail saying that I really appreciate all of his education and the opportunity for me to tell him "thank you" now. If he didn't teach me in that way, my current knowledge wouldn't exist for sure. I sincerely appreciate him.

A car driving in front of me on the way to downtown from my office.
It says,

"DANGER! Invisible Beam."

Well...what do you want me to do.....?

At least, I changed a lane...

New Ritz Carlton hotel, designed by Gensler, in downtown LA,
I personally think the coloration of the facade is pretty bad.

There must have been other blues that could corporate each other and work together.

After my 2:00 P.M. meeting, I came back to my home and worked from my home office,
with a glass of martini, sea urchin and crackers.

A day of a designer -

Every time I am interviewed by design students, I am asked about a day of a designer.
There is no such a routine for me, but as examples, my last Thursday and Friday were like this.

木曜日 8:00 A.M.
8:00 A.M. on Thursday
I stopped at a nearby cafe and bought a cup of cappuccino.

Driving for 2 hours in a traffic and headed for LA. It is only an hour drive without traffic though.

There was a field measurement scheduled at 10:00A.M., so I stopped in downtown.

After that, I drove to my office to work on some errands.

30 minutes later, I arrived at my office.

Major tenants of this building are film related companies and actor and actress's guild.
A building lobby with a line of ottomans by Mies van der Rohe.

I received a call from City and asked to come over at 1:00 P.M., so I rushed my assistant to
finish up her drawings.

Driving through a high end residential area, dreaming about buying one of those houses someday.

1:06 P.M., arrived at City.

Going up to a Plan Checker's office on the 8th floor.

I handed a document that could solve an issue we were facing one step before the permit issuance.
Then, I went down to a cafeteria on the ground floor and bought a teriyaki cheese burger and a small drink.
It was $7.77! The lady at the cafe said,
"You should buy a lot today, and if you win, give me half, OK?"
Well, I want permit more than the prize...

After that, I drove back to OC.

Then worked at home for a while.

I had a 6:00 P.M. meeting for a project in NY, but I could not help stopping at a driving rage before that.

After the meeting, my client and I went out for dinner, and it was 11:00P.M. when I got home.

Friday at 8:00 AM, I worked from a nearby cafe a little.

Usually the traffic is pretty smooth on Friday. I received a call from City, so I changed a lane to downtown.

FINALLY, we got a construction permit! Yesterday's 777 must have been a sign!
This project site is a more than 100 years old brick building, and had some difficulties to modify it in the way we wanted, so it took us 2 months to clear all the requirements.
Our client was very happy to hear the good news and said, " I owe you a drink! Let me know when you are available!". Finally I was relieved.

The way back to my office was shinning, and of course, I didn't feel like being stuck in the office, so I called my assistants and said, "We are going out for lunch!".

The place we selected was a good Italian restaurant in Hollywood called CHEEBO.

We could draw on our tablecloth, so I drew a Japanese anime character that I remember from my childhood, but I couldn't draw it right sine I have been away from Japan for 20 years...
My assistants went, "what is that....?"

We ordered a shrimp pasta, mushroom risotto and prosciutto pizza.
The pizza was especially delicious.

We took a walk in Pacific Design Center where we can find many furniture showrooms.

At 3:30 P.M., I said "let's all enjoy the evening", and we were dismissed.

I didn't draw anything except the Japanese anime character in these 2 days.
I don't want to say this is the routine of a designer, but this is the real world to me.
