クリスマスプレゼント- Christmas Present-

先日、オフィスのドアをノックする音がしたので、
The other day, I heard someone knock on our office door.

「誰かお客様がいらしたのかな？」とそそくさと足を運んだ。
I went to the door with my brisk walk.

セールスや、ＵＰＳなどの配達の人はいつも何も言わずにドアを開けて入ってくる。

If it was some sort of sales or a UPS delivery person, they usually come in without knocking.

ドアを開けると、きれいなお姉さんが、ラッピング越しに沢山のカップケーキが入っている大きなかごを持って立っていた。と、その後ろには、見慣れた会社のビルの管理会社のお兄さんも立っている。

When I opened the door, I found a beautiful lady and a gentleman I have seen at our building's management office. I could hardly see her face because of a large basket filled with cupcakes in her arms.

すると、お姉さんが、

The lady said,

「ビルからのクリスマスプレゼントです。」と言ってそのかごを渡してくれた。

"This is for you from us." and handed the basket to me.

私はびっくりして、「ビルからのですか？どうも有難うございます！」
I was surprised and asked them, "From the management office? Thank you!"

と言って、ニコニコしてそのかごを受け取り、またそそくさと内田さんの部屋へ。

Then I brought the basket to Mr. Uchida's office with a big smile on my face.

「ビルからのクリスマ・・・」と言う前に、

Before I even finished saying, "This is from the management office!"

それを見るなり内田さんは「ビルからのクリスマスプレゼントだろ。毎年くれるんだ。」と一言。

He said, "it must be from the management office. They bring something to us every year" and he didn't seem like he was even interested.

当然だが、私の様に驚きはなかった様子。でも、甘い物好きの内田さんは続けて一言、
But, then he who loves sweets said,


「それ、全部俺のだからな。」
"They are all mine!"




もちろん冗談だが。
He was, of course, kidding.

あんまり沢山あるので、家に持って帰らせてもらった。
They were too much to finish at office, so I bought some back home.

アメリカでは、ビルの人がクリスマスプレゼントをくれるんだぁ、素敵だな。
I found it a nice custom that the building management company brings the presents to all the tenants in the building.

なんて単純に思いながら、これはある意味、日本のお歳暮にも似ているのかなと思った。

It may be similar to, so called, "Osaibo" in Japan.

クリスマスカードが、年賀状の役目に似ているように。

Like a Christmas card in this country plays a role of a Japanese New Year card (nen-ga-jo).

国は違えども、年の暮れに「感謝の気持ち」を伝えようとする人の本能は同じなのだろうか。

Maybe it is a common instinct of human beings that everyone tries to show his or her appreciations to other people in the end of a year, all over the world.

しばしば、本能からというよりも、ただの慣習になりがちな昨今だが。

Well, it now tends to be more like a custom than instinct, I think.
