Permit 2 -

Now, we are making efforts to obtain permits for a project in LA downtown.
We had a meeting with a plan checker at 8:00 A.M at City Hall.

This time, everything went though smoothly, and I was so relieved.

Then, I headed for a meeting with Environmental Health.
We got permit from them, so it was a pretty encouraging day.

Department of Building and Safety
Los Angeles Fire Department
City Planning Department
Bureau of Engineering
Bureau of Sanitation
Community Redevelopment Agency
County of Los Angeles Environmental Health Department

We are simply making one small restaurant, but permits and clearances are required from the departments listed above. We have one more to go, and I am crossing my fingers.
Different from Japan, it takes such a long time before the construction can actually start.
There are inspections during and in the end of the construction, and the restaurant can not start operating
until we pass all of them.

Today, I visited the job site of an office project in Long Beach.
The last item for this project was an installation of a curtain at a conference room glass wall.

The atmosphere of reception area became nice and softer. This curtain works to diffuse the bounced sound, and creates semi-privacy in the conference room.

There is no meeting planned for tomorrow. It's been a while since I stayed in my office all day long last time.

Permit -

I left my house at 6:00 A.M. this morning and drove down south for an hour and half to San Diego.

I had meetings scheduled with City of San Diego and Environmental Health for construction permits.

It is always sunny here.

Since this is a restaurant project, the permits from these 2 places are inevitable. People assume that any plan checkers would give us the same comments on our drawings, but it really depends on the person. I often adjust my attitude based on their comments and personality as required. Sometimes I act like a nervous person, and other times I act like a frustrated one.

The person who checked our Mechanical drawing today was a very nice gentleman, so we passed without any problems; however, we had one issue at Health Department and re-submission was required.

When our drawings are approved, I still get excited as if I passed a difficult exam, but when they are not, I feel pretty disappointed.

Well, I think I at least tried and made a good effort today, so I think I deserve a Starbucks ice cream.

and my favorite green tea.

This week, I still have meetings with LA city, and next week with LA Health Department.
This phase in a project is always the most tough and requires extra cares.

Long Time Friend -

My friend was visiting me from Chicago in last weekend for half work and half joy.

He was my classmate at school and we were colleagues at SOM in Chicago. Every Wednesday after work was our drinking situation at nearby bar, and he often invited me to multi-cultural parties in weekends.
His wife is also a respectable interior designer and working for a major design company, and has received several awards in the past.

His portfolio was filled with prestigious works that he took care in the last 10 years at SOM.
We discussed about a possibility to work together

On Sunday, we went to Laguna Beach and had a nice drink overlooking the beach.

Two Girls

Three Men

Fifteen Birds

At night, we had dinner at Redondo Beach. He is originally from Europe and was very selective about coffee and wine. I am 6 feet tall, but I had to look up to talk to him because he was 6'-4"...

"I am a little shorter then 2 meters."
He smiled.
