MOZZA - モッツァ

仕事の関係で、昨日あるイタリアンレストランを訪れランチをした。名前はPIZZARIA　MOZZA (モッツァ)。 （ウェブリンク）
I had lunch at an Italian Restaurant yesterday for a project related reason. The name of the place is PIZZARIA MOZZA (LINK).

オフィスから車で１０分程の所にあり、前から名前は聞いていたが入ったことは無かった。
It is located only 10 minutes from my office by car and I have known the name but never visited before.

ここの何が気に入ったかと言うと、店内のディテールがお洒落にコーディネートされているところ。

I was impressed by their well coordinated details.

まず席に着くと、目の前の白い皿の上に封筒が・・・実はこの中にフォークとナイフが入っている。

Silverware is hidden inside an envelope on a white plate.

水は冷やしたボトルで出てくる。

Tap water is served in a chilled glass bottle.

コーラはレトロ感のある小さなボトルで。

Coke comes in a small traditional coke bottle.

アイスティーのディキャンターの蓋は丸ごとのレモン。

A decanter for ice tea is capped with a whole lemon.

などなど。

and so on.

殆どのレストランがただ何となく綺麗で、ある程度の食べ物が出てくるだけだが、ここはオーナーの気配りやセンスを感じる事ができる。
Most of the restaurants out there serve O.K. food in O.K. environment and provide O.K. experience and service. Here, I felt the owner's sense toward a dining experience and care to the customers.

頼んだピザ。薄手の生地はとても好みで美味しかった。この他アンチョビソースのサラダも頼んだが、これも旨い。

A pizza I ordered. The thin dish was my favorite and the tasted very good.
I also ordered a salad with anchovi dressing, and it was also very good.

お金を払い外へ出た時に、久しぶりにまた行きたくなるレストランに巡り会えたと思えた。

近いうちにPIZZERIA　MOZZA　の隣にある　OSTERIA　MOZZA　に行ってみよう。
After I paid and stepped out to outside, I felt that I had found a restaurant that I would definitely go back again. Next time, I will try OSTERIA MOZZA located right next to PIZZERIA MOZZA.

さて、LAのダウンタウンに進行中のレストラン。MOZZAの上を行く事が期待されている。

この緊張感は結構好きかも。
Well, the restaurant I am currently designing in LA downtown is expected to surpass MOZZA.

I think I enjoy this pressure.

On my way home - 帰り道

昨日は帰宅時にまだ空が明るかったので、ちょっと寄り道をしてみた。
It was still bright out when I left my office last evening, so I decided to stray from the route a bit.

ロデオに観光客は戻ってきているのだろうか、と思い寄ってみたが、既に閉店時間を過ぎていたので
閑散としていた。この不況の中、やはり店を閉める有名店もある。
I was curious if tourists were coming back to Rodeo Drive, but the stores were closed already when I drove by. In this economical crisis, there are well known brands closing their stores.

ビバリーヒルズのレンタカー屋。アウディーはともかく、フェラーリやポルシエまで、借りる人がいるから置いてあるのだろうな。

A rent-a-car place in Beverly Hills. There must be some people who actually rent the Ferrari and Porsche.

ついてないことに、この一体が停電で信号機が動かず大渋滞。
I was out of luck this evening. Because of a power outage in this area, traffic lights were not working, and the cars were all stuck.

全く進まないので、またカメラを出して遊んでいた。
上の景色を回しながら撮ってみた。
Well, since it was not moving at all, I pulled out my camera and started playing with it.
This is the same view as the above simply taken by turning a camera.

なんとか渋滞を抜け、暫く高速を走っていたら目の前にとても大きな月が現われた。
After going through the traffic jam, I was driving on a highway for a while, then suddenly
the fantastic huge moon appeared in front of me.

現実と幻想的な世界を両方垣間見て帰宅し、今日の現実を癒す為に冷蔵庫からビールを一本。
少しすると、現実逃避が始まった。
Feeling both the reality and fantasy, I arrived at home. I opened my refrigerator and pulled out a bottle of beer to cure my reality I had in the day.
A detachment from the reality started shortly.

Shinny Piece - シャイニー・ピース

ラフィーネのライトを作った時のレジンの残りがプラスチックのコップの底に残った。
上手に取り出し、オフィスに入り込んで来た日の光に透かしてみた。
Left over resin got harden at the bottom of a plastic cup.
The sunlight shined though the object and sparkled.

内側でプラスチックの粒が光を乱反射し、とても綺麗だった。

この他にも小物を思案中。子供の頃の発見みたいで面白い。

The light was scattered by the plastic pieces inside, and it looked very precious.

I like this kind of experiment because it reminds me my childhood discovery.

Nothing particular - ただなんとなく

前回のブログの記事に書いたマイケルジャクソンのカセットテープを探していたら、クローゼットの奥から出てきたダンボールの中から3枚の紙が出てきた。
When I was looking for a Michael Jackson's cassette tape (refer to my previous blog), I found 3 sheets of paper in a cardboard box and caught my eyes.

物事には常に裏と表があって、
表と思えるものが実は裏だったりする時もある。
そして、そんな事はどうでも良いときが多い。
There is a flip side to everything.
Sometimes a front side maybe a back side.
And most of the time, you can put this on your side.


よく考える。
”今一番欲しい物ってなんだろう？”

I often wonder
"what do I want most now?"
a cabin a deserted island a piece of chocolate


”本当は嬉しいくせに。”
よく言われる言葉。
時々、本当には嬉しくない時がある。
"I know you are happy now."
People often tell me.
But sometimes I am not really happy.


”お前ならそう言うと思った。”
そう？　実はそれ、物凄く考えて口にした言葉。
普段の時は言わないけど。
"I knew you were going to say that."
Yeah right... I ponder about this so hard and put these words together.
I don't usually say this.


”何でそういう言い方するかな？”
その理由は小さな事で、
大きなのは目の前の問題の解決策の方。
"Why do you always say things like that?"
The reason is a very little thing.
Focus on the solution for our problem.


”明日天気になるかな？”
いいじゃん雨でも。
二人でいれば、結構楽しいし。
"You think it's gonna be sunny tomorrow?"
Rain is fine.
As long as we are together.


”何の夢見てたの？”
はっきり覚えていないから 夢なんだよ。
"What kind of dream did you have last night?"
It's called dream because you don't remember clearly.


”いいかげんにしてよ。”
良い加減でしてるよ。
(This is too hard to translate into English. sorry)


ななめ前の女が貧乏ゆすりをしている。
A lady across the isle is jiggling her knees.


貧相な顔。
A meager face.


冷めたコーヒーはさらに苦さを増した。
A cup of cold coffee has gotten much bitter.




思い出した。シカゴにいた時にインディアナのプロジェクトをやった。
現場に向かう朝早い飛行機の中で、ただなんとなく書いた物だ。

Michael Jackson 1987 - マイケル ジャクソン 1987年

昨日の午後3時半、車のラジオから”マイケル・ジャクソンが心臓発作の為亡くなりました”、とニュースが流れて来た。最初は聞き間違いかと思った。
At 3:00P.M. yesterday, I heard the news from my car audio; "Michael Jackson has passed away from cardiac arrest."　I doubted what I had just heard at the beginning.

22年前の1987年、当時中学３年生だった僕は洋楽にはまっていた。9月21日に兵庫県、西宮球場で行われたマイケル・ジャクソンのライブ当日に、本人の希望で突然プログラムに追加された内容があった。
22 years ago in 1987, I was in a middle school in Japan, and was crazy about American music.
On September 21st, there was a program that was unexpectedly added to Michael Jackson's concert at Nishinomiya stadium in Hyogo prefecture.


この1週間前、群馬県で功明ちゃん（当時5歳）という男の子が誘拐され、橋の上から落とされて殺害されるという、感情的にならざるを得ない残虐な事件が起こった。（捜査は難航し2002年9月14日に時効が成立している。）
A week before this concert, 5 years old boy, Yoshiaki, was kidnapped in Gunma prefecture and pushed away from a bridge and killed... This emotional and horrible incident ran out of statute of limitation on September 14th in 2002.


マイケルはこの事件を聞き、スリラーを歌い終わった後に
”大変痛ましく思っている。出来る事ならば、今すぐにご両親の所に行きこの気持ちを伝えたい。今回の日本公演を功明君に捧げます。功明君、今君は空から僕たちを見ているよね。こんな悲しく酷い事件が二度と起きない事を祈るよ。”
とコメントし、 I Just Can't Stop Loving You を功明ちゃんに捧げている。
Michael Jackson heard about this news before his concert, and decided to take a time to make a comment about this incident during his concert.
He said, "I am very sorry and deeply saddened to hear about Yoshiaki. If I could, I would like to rush to his parents to express my words of sympathy and pay tribute to Yoshiyaki. I would like to dedicate my Japanese tour to Yoshiyaki.. Yoshiyaki, I know you're out there watching us. I hope such a brutal and heartbreaking thing never happens again. And I love you."
Then he dedicated a song, I Just Can't Stop Loving You, to him.

"アメリカの大スターが、会った事もない他の国の一人の男の子の事をこんなに想っている"
という事実に強い衝撃を受け、マイケル・ジャクソンという人をとても身近に感じた。
I was simply shocked by the fact that a big American star became so emotional to a Japanese boy who he had never met, and this was the moment that I felt close to Michael Jackson.


このライブの模様は、確か後日テレビで放映され、僕はテレビのスピーカーの前にテープレコーダーを設置し、殆ど全てを録音していた。
I think this whole concert was broadcasted later on TV. I remember that I placed a casette tape recorder in front of a TV speaker and recorded the sound.



今は午前4時15分。3時ぐらいからなぜか目が覚めてしまい、この22年前の事をベッドの中で思い出していた。
It is 4:15 A.M.now. My eyes opened around 3:00 A.M. and I started thinking about this 22 years old memory in my bed.


”あの時のテープ、まだあるかな。”
"Maybe I still have the tape?"

押入れの奥からカセットテープの山を引っ張り出してみた。引っ越す度に少しづつ処分していたので、今はこれしかないが、この中にあのテープが残っていないかと探してみた。
I pulled out my cassette tape collections from the deepest part of my closet and looked for the tape.





あった！薄れた文字でＡ面に　Michael Jackson Live in Japan　と書かれている。
Found it! Its fading letter says Michael Jackson Live in Japan.


早速唯一残っていたカセットテーププレーヤーを引っ張り出して再生してみたが、調度その所でテープが巻き込まれてしまう。多分、英語でマイケルが何と言っているのか聞き取ろうと、何度もそこだけ再生したからだろう。
I also pulled out only one casette tape player in my house and slided in the tape and pressed play button, but the tape got stuck when it came to his comment. I guess I was replaying the part many times trying to catch the his wards in English.

幾度かのチャレンジの後、再生に成功した。
スリラーが終わった後、一旦録音を停止していたようで最後の部分しか入っていないが、その時の音声が、これ。
After several trials, I succeeded to replay a portion.

"for all the people in Japan, and my dear friend Yoshiaki."　と言っているのが聞き取れる。

彼はこの家族に2万ドルを寄付し（リンク）、さらに、Man In the Mirror という曲を功明ちゃんに捧げ、ＣＤケースのスリーブに
He donated $20,000 to Yoshiaki's parents （Link） and even made a song, Man In the Mirror, and dedicated to this boy. The CD sleeve says below（Link）。

"Dedicated to Yoshiaki Hagiwara. May such a terrible thing never happen again.
I will always love you. Michael Jackson."

と記した（リンク）。

歌詞（リンク）を読んでみて欲しい。
”もっと世界を良くしたければ、僕は鏡に映ったその人間から変えていくよ”　と歌っている。
Man in the Mirror とは、”鏡に映った自分”　の事。
I like the lyric making a statement; "I will start from myself if I want to change the world".

実際には遠い存在の人だったが、このいたたまれない事件を介して僕の中にマイケル・ジャクソンという名前は22年間刻み込まれていた。そして、これからも消えることはないだろう。
He was a big star and of course, we didn't have any personal connections. However, his name has been stamped indelibly in my mind, and it will remain there for the rest of my life.

Saturady Evening - 土曜日の夕暮れ

さっき、カメラを片手に家の周りを歩いてみた。特に何も考えずに。静かな土曜日の夕暮れ。
In a calm Saturday evening, I was taking a walk in my neighborhood, with a camera in my hand, without thinking about anything particular.

Curiosity5 - 好奇心5－そろそろどうにかしないと・・・

さて、そろそろ本気でＲａｆｆｉｎｅ用のライトを完成させなければならないので、色々試した結果、一番良いと思われる素材を昨日買って来た。その際、また面白い物を見つけついつい購入。
Well, we must finish making the light fixture for Raffine sooner or later, so I went to purchase the material that worked the best for our fixture. As usual, I found something interesting in the store and couldn't help buying it.

この粒を水に入れておくと、大きくなるらしい。　
It said that these small balls get bigger in a glass of water.


ライトを後回しにし、早速実験。
直ぐに大きくなってくれるはず！
Putting the light fixture on the side for a moment, we tried this first.
It should get bigger instantly!!
(In this movie, Erika found that it will take 6-8 hours...)

待たなければならない様なので、本題のライトへ。
色々な種類の電球を試してみる。
Well, while waiting for the balls to inflate, let's move on to the main subject.
We tested variety of light bulbs.



光の反射の仕方や影の出来方を観察し、一番効果的な形を探し出す。
By researching the reflection of the light and forms of the shadow, we tried to find the best figure of the fixture.




あ、さっきの粒はどうなっただろうか？
What is going on with the balls now?








もう、少しだけ大きくなっている！
It's got bigger a little already!



完成していないのでお見せ出来ないが、ライトはその後, 実際に天井から吊るし、耐熱テストを繰り返した。
Until the production is completed we would like to avoid showing the fixture.
The photo is showing our heat resistant test of the material.





暫く自分の机に戻り、５時間ほど過ぎてから思い出したようにグラスを見てみると・・・
After spending about 5 hours at my desk, I went back to the glass...



でかい！
Wow!


これ、実は花瓶の中に入れておくだけで、花に水をやってくれる玉。
These balls are usually placed in a vase to feed water to flowers.
