New York Again - 再びニューヨーク

arth Broadway 店グランドオープニングに向けての最終デザインコーデイネーションの為、昨日の朝、眠い目を擦りながら朝６時の便でニューヨークへ。

I flew in to New York by 6:00 AM flight in yesterday morning. This time, I am here to coordinate the final design touches for their grand opening.  

ソフトオープニングはしているが、店内はまだ調整中なので遠目からの写真だけ。

お店の看板は、帽子専門店がまだ少ないこの街で存在を主張するため、arthと書く代わりに　”HAT”　にした。

The business is currently in a soft opening stage and still requires some designing, so the inside photo to be uploaded in a later day. We decided to say "HAT" on the store sign instead of  "arth" in order to emphasize the content of the store in this city where not many hat stores are around.

Now, below are the photos of the city.

Our client, Mr. Kurihara, and I had a chicken rice (?) for lunch.  

サワークリームがかかっていて、とても美味しかった。

It was covered with sour cream, and was very tasty. 

写真のきちんとした撮り方などは分からないので、僕の写真はいつも個人的に見た物や感じた物を好きに表現した物。
I have not learned a formal way of taking photos, so my photos are simply depicting the way I saw and felt when I saw the object or sceneries. 


ニューヨークは常に何か目の前の物が動いている気がする。ただベンチに座って眺めているだけで１日過ごせてしまう。
目の前を通っていた人のほぼ全員が、もう２度と出会う事も無い人たち、と考えると不思議で刹那的な感覚を覚えた。
Things in my sight are always moving here in NY. i can easily spend a whole day by sitting on a bench and watching the things around me.
It made me feel strange and temporary when I thought that I will never see almost all of the people who passed by again.

Mexico again - 再びメキシコ

さて、またメキシコに行ってきた。

今回はある方のこの渋いベンツで連れて行って頂いた。

I visited Mexico again. 

This time, we drove this beautiful Mercedes that belongs to the person who I went with.  

内装もとても格好良い。

LAまでの帰りに運転してみたが、鉄の塊を動かしている感じでアクセルがとても重い。

急ブレーキをしても、滑ってしまい止らないらしい。

Interior layout and design is very cool, too. 

I drove this car on the way back to LA from Mexico. The car was like a steel box and its accelerator was so stiff. I was told that it won't react to a sudden braking because of its weight. 

今回の訪問で訪れたCasa de los Siete Patios (７つのパティオを持つ家）。

フランス人建築家、Jean-Loup Bitterlin　の自宅で、今は一般に貸し出している。

U2のボノも泊まりに来た事があるなど、セレブにも人気らしい。

This is one of the places we visited; Casa de los Siete Patio (A house with 7 patios).

The house is designed and owned by a French architect, Jean-Loup Bitterlin, and it is 

available for vacation rental, wedding and so on. Several celebrity have stayed here including Bono from U2.      

目の前に見えるのは青い海のみ。

All I could see in front of the house was a huge blue ocean.

中庭を囲む様に家が建っているため、日の光がどこにいても入ってくる。

Interior garden brings natural light into all rooms. 

地元在住のジョシュにワイナリーも案内してもらった。

Joshue, who lives in this town, guided me to wineries on the last day.     

テイスティングもし、仕事を忘れて２人で真面目な話や下らない話で盛り上がった。

We had some wine tasting and enjoyed our casual time and conversation.  

最後にホテルでジョシュと。

Well, it looks like we went there for a vacation, but actually this is a part of our work. 

さて、来週は１週間NYでarthのグランドオープニングの準備だ。
Now, I will be in NY whole next week to help set up arth's grand opening.

A Century Old Face - １世紀前の顔

The Spice Tableの建物の表面を長い間覆っていた化粧を丁寧に剥がして行く。

ガスバーナーでペイントを熱し、レンガがから剥がれ易くし、少しづつ手作業で剥いでゆくという

地道な作業。

Thick make up has been carefully removed from the facade of a century old building for The Spice Table.

The paint is heated by gas burner and peeled off from the brick by hand little by little.  

やはり素材その物の表情は素直で馴染み易い。

The authentic touch of the material is always friendly and honest.

Mexico - メキシコ

１泊２日でメキシコへ出張して来た。

自宅から車で１時間半程南へ走ると、そこはメキシコとの国境。

I had a two day business trip to Mexico.

Driving down to the south from my place for two hours, we arrived at the Mexican border.  

あの柵の向こう側はアメリカ。

Overlooking the United States across the fence.

目的地の町へ行く途中に数多く目に留まった工事途中のまま残されたビル。

景気低迷と共に工事が中止され、そのまま残されているそうだ。

長い間放って置かれた為海からの潮風で鉄が錆び、もう使い物にならないらしい。

Several abandoned buildings caught my eyes on the way to the destination. 

They have been left since the economical crises started.

I was told that wind from the ocean has rusted the steel and many of those building structures are useless now.   

綺麗な海岸線。

目的地に到着して最初に連れて行ってもらった屋台で食べた大きなハマグリ。

As soon as we arrived at the destination, we were taken to a food stand where we ate

a huge clam and ceviche on tacos. 

セビーチェ（魚のマリネ）を乗せたタコ。

とても美味しかった。

メキシコっぽい写真。

This photo is representing Mexico well, I think. 

街の中の様子。メキシコ人の多い南カリフォルニアで目にする風景に似ているので、特に驚く物はなかった。

The city's atmosphere was somehow close to some parts of  the southern California, so I was not very surprised.

スーパーマーケットも充実している。ただ、値段はアメリカ国内とほぼ同じ。

普通の人はここでは買い物は出来ないだろう。

Local large grocery stores offer everything we can find in the U.S., but the price was almost the same.

Probably this store is for upper class Mexican people. 

最後にご馳走になったステーキ・・・

大きすぎ。約$20（1700円）。ここではかなり高価だ。

A huge stake I was offered. It was about $20, and it must be a luxurious meal here. 

帰りの車から見た風景。

Beautiful scenery I saw on the way back to the U.S.. 

国境付近からは大渋滞。

車と車の間を多くの商売人が練り歩いていた。

キティーちゃんの縫いぐるみやジュース、お菓子をうり人達。

There were long lines of cars going into the United States. Many Mexican people are trying to 

sell souvenirs, drinks and candies.  

ADIOS AMIGOS (またな、友よ！）

ゆっくりとTijuana（ティワナ）の街の向こう側に夕日が沈んで行った。

なぜか少し寂しさを覚えた。

The sun was setting slowly across Tijuana.

Somehow, it made me feel lonely. 

貧富の差、治安の悪化、大気汚染など、多くの問題を抱えている街が国境付近には多いと聞いた。個人的なメキシコ人に対する印象は、陽気で、とても真面目に働く人種。

I learned that a gap between the rich and the poor, deteriorating condition of public safety and air pollution are serious issues in some cities close to the border. 

My impressions for Mexican people are cheerful and hard worker.     

この国の街の発展に力を貸せる日が早く来る事を望みながら、国境へ。

Hoping to contribute to a development of a city in Mexico soon, I crossed the American border.

Big Hole - 大きな穴

The Spice Tableの建物の横に、軽自動車一台がすっぽり入る程の穴を開けた。

グリーストラップと言うコンクリートの箱を埋め込み、そこで排水中のオイルを取り除いてから下水に流す。これは市から要求される施設。この位の大きさの物で、工費も含めて約$25,000 (約220万円）程。

We made a huge hole next to The Spice Table building. It is big enough to bury a small size car. 

This is for a concrete box called grease trap that works to eliminate oil from waste water, and it is required by city. The cost is about $25,000 for this size including installation.   

かなり深い　（僕の身長は184cm)。

It is pretty deep (I am 6'-0"). 

どうしても一番下まで行ってみたくてどうやろうか考えたが、

周りの砂がとてももろく、上がってこれなそうだったので諦めた。

The photo is showing me thinking how to get to the bottom, but the sand was too soft for me to come back up, so I gave up. 

掘っていたら出てきた古いビルの基礎。

工事現場は普段見れないものが見れるのでとても面白い。
The construction site is always very interesting since I can find many hidden elements that can not be seen from outside.

arth Lighting - arth ライティング

今日は、NYで工事が最終段階をむかえているarth用の照明をオフィスで組み立てた。
Today, we assembled light fixtures for arth in NY. Its construction is coming to end in a few days.

お店の雰囲気に合うワイアー、ソケット、コンセントプラグ、傘をそれぞれ購入し、ＬＡで組み立てた後、ＮＹに持って行く。
Each wire, socket, outlet plug and shade has been selected to work with the atmosphere of the store, and they will be brought to NY after being assembled here in LA.






これを書いている今はまだオフィス。少し前に太陽が沈んだところ。
I am still in my office now. The sun set a few minutes ago.

Sunday Construction Site - 日曜日の工事現場

日曜日の工事現場には誰もいない。

Nobody is around in the construction site on Sunday. 

汚れた機材、穴の開いた危険な壁、飲みかけのジュースのボトル。

Dirty equipment, rough edged walls and abandoned juice bottle. 

普段は近寄りたくないそれらが、静寂の中に佇んでいる。

Those, that I don't usually want to get close, are sitting still in the quietness. 

いつも吸うのを躊躇う埃だらけの空気さえ、今日は澄んでいる。

The air, I hesitate to inhale because of the dust, is even clear today. 

１世紀前の、土の匂いがした。

I smell a century old soil.
