Design Time - デザインタイム

この仕事をしていると、気持ちを切り替える時間がとても大切になってくる。普段はクライアントとのミーティングや建設許可申請図面のチェック、工事業者とのやり取り、プロジェクトスケジュールの作成などなど、デザイン自体をする時間はプロジェクト全体の１０～２０％程。しかし、その１０％が我々にとってはとても重要なので、他の事を忘れて集中する必要がある。

It is very important for me to switch gears during the work. Most of my day is occupied by meeting with client, checking drawings for permit, coordination with general contractors, creating project schedules and so on. Actual time for "designing" is about 10% to 20% of the whole project, but this time is very important for me so I need to focus on it without thinking about other errands. 

現在一つのプロジェクトで、１００年前の建物を改装したレストランの建設許可を申請中だが、これがなかなか手強い。構造的な補強、身体障害者に対する配慮、冷暖房、電気など現在の基準に合う様に変えなければならない。LA市役所と保健所からの図面修正要求に頭が痛い。

One of our projects is to design a restaurant in a100 years old building, and it is pretty tough. Structural reinforcement, attention to ADA rules, air conditioning / heating and electricity need to meet today's codes. 

Currently we are suffering from drawing corrections from City of LA and Health Department.    

昨日は、併行して動かしている他のプロジェクト達のデザインをする為、午後６時にオフィスから逃避して、スケッチブックと資料を片手にビバリーヒルズの権八のバーへ (リンク）。

Yesterday, in order to focus on designing other projects, I escaped from my office at 6:00PM and headed for Gonpachi Beverly Hills (LINK) with a sketch book in my hand.    

LAで数少ないお気に入りの場所。ここはとても落ち着いているうえに、店長が友達なので一人でも気楽に行ける。

This well designed cozy place is one of my few favorite places in LA. 

Also, I am a friend of the executive manager there, so I feel easy to go there even by myself.    

日本庭園を見渡せる贅沢な空間で、ビールとおつまみを頼みスケッチブックに向かった。
平日のバーはいつもあまり混んでいないので、自由に使わせてもらえた。
I ordered a glass of cold beer and small dishes at a bar over looking a Japanese garden, and started running a pen on my sketchbook. Usually, the bar is not crowded in weekdays, so he let me use the table freely.

贅沢に聞こえるかもしれないが、午後７時までは確か生ビール一杯＄３（３００円弱）、おつまみも一皿＄５（５００円弱）程。この日、ビール一杯とおつまみ２皿で、お会計はチップを入れても＄１８（１７００円程）。

It might sound that I am living in a luxurious life, but actually, if I go there during happy hour (till 7:00PM I think), a glass of beer is $3, I think, and small appetizers are around $5/dish. This time, I had one glass of beer and two plates of appetizers and the total was $18 including tip.   

一人でゆっくりと仕事をさせてもらった。

I could spend a quality time there alone.
