Noise - ノイズ

先日朝１０時のミーティングに参加する為ＬＡのダウンタウンに向かったが、早く着き過ぎてしまったのでスターバックスで時間をつぶしていた。
The other day, I was at Starbucks in downtown LA killing my time till a 10:00A.M. meeting.

コーヒーを片手に明るいカウンターに座り、雑誌に目をやっていた。
背後でオーダーをとる店員の声と、スピーカーから流れる静かなジャズの音が聞こえる。
I was reading a magazine at a bright counter with a cup of coffee in my hand.
I heard a clerk taking orders and soft jazz flowing out from a speaker in my back.

時折聞こえる　”プォー”　というとても心地のよいトランペットの音が、朝のせわしない気持ちに安らぎを与えてくれた。
Some soft trumpet sounds offered me comfort and took me away from a busy morning tension.

しかしこのトランペット、どうも音楽とテンポがずれている。と言うか、店に入ってくる人とテンポが合っている・・・
But this trumpet sound didn't seem like it is following the jazz music. Instead, it is following the tempo of people who came in through an entrance door...

周りを見渡して気がついた。トランペットの音と思っていた”プォー”は、ドアの蝶番がこすれる音だったのだ。何がどうしてなのかは分からないが、”ギー”ではなく、”プォー”なのだ。そして、その音はとても耳に心地よい。
Then I noticed that this comfortable trumpet sound was generated by the hinges on the door somehow.

それがこのドア。（外にいる金髪の美女にどうしても目が行ってしまうが・・・）
This is the door. (Don't let your eyes be caught by the blond lady...)


その時、次の課題が浮かんだ。
I came up with my next challenge.

インテリアデザイン＋ノイズ
Interior Design + Noise

ここで言うノイズは、人の話し声やバックミュージックではなく、
Here, I am not talking about people's talk or background music.

コンクリートの上を歩くハイヒールの音
古い木の床がこすれる音
グラスを木のテーブルに置く時の音
グラスを鉄のテーブルの上に置く時の音
椅子を引くときの音
古い蛍光灯が点灯する時の音
Noise made by high heel shoes walking on a concrete floor
Noise comes from a grinding old wood floors
Noise made when a glass is placed on a wood table
Noise made when a glass is placed on an iron table
Noise occurred by a dragged chair
Noise generated when an old fluorescent light is turned on

一般的に雑音と呼ばれるこれらは、人間の聴覚に響き、照明やバックミュージックの様に全体の雰囲気を作り出すのにもっと役に立てるはずだと思った。また、今回のスターバックスのドアの様に、期待に沿わない音が聞こえた時の驚きを作り出すのも面白い。雑音をコーディネートしてみたい。
These are so called "noise" and often receives negative reactions; however, I think they can play an important role to create an interesting atmosphere along with cool lighting techniques and a background music. As I experienced in this Starbucks, creating an unexpected noise could be also interesting. I want to coordinate the Noise.

最近ちょっとまたデザインに迷っていたので、新たな課題が見つかって嬉しい。
I was a little lost in design these days, so now I feel excited facing the new challenge.

さて、オフィスでまた新たな実験を始めるか。
Now, I need to start a new experiment in my office.
